A Linux VPS hosted in Montreal, Canada, with Claude Code installed, plus git, tmux and the build toolchain. You connect over SSH, you set your agent loose on a big refactor, and you close the laptop.
Your Claude Code VPS is delivered from our Montreal datacenter: Intel Xeon Gold 6132, DDR4 ECC and NVMe, from €7.90 a month.
In a command-line session latency is felt on every keystroke, and from Quebec, Ontario or the north-east of the United States, Montreal answers in a few tens of milliseconds. The code the agent works on stays on Canadian soil.
Your Claude Code VPS run on Intel Xeon Gold 6132 processors, error-correcting DDR4 ECC memory and 100% NVMe storage, in our Montreal datacenter. DDoS protection included and support 7 days a week. An agent that compiles and runs test suites spends its life on the disk: NVMe shows.
In a command-line session, latency is felt on every keystroke. From Quebec, Ontario or the north-east of the United States, Montreal answers in a few tens of milliseconds: the terminal stays snappy, where a European server drags.
Your repositories, your branches and your session history are written in Montreal and never leave. No replication to another country: that is the answer to give the client whose source code you handle under contract.
Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent that lives in your terminal: it reads your repository, writes code, runs the tests, makes the commits. On a laptop it stops the moment the machine sleeps. Putting it on a VPS changes one simple, decisive thing: the session no longer depends on the state of your computer.
In practice you set a big job going in the evening, you close the laptop, and you read the diff over breakfast. You pick the same session back up from the office, then from home, without reinstalling anything. And you run three agents side by side on three projects, each in its own tmux window.
This is the heart of the setup, and it comes down to two commands. You open a named tmux session, you launch claude inside it, you detach. The session survives closing the terminal, losing your Wi-Fi and shutting the laptop, because it runs on the server and not on your machine.
You reconnect later over SSH, you reattach to the session, and you find the agent exactly where it was, with all of its context. That is the difference between an assistant you keep restarting and a job that keeps moving.
A coding agent runs real commands. On your workstation it inherits your session: your SSH keys, your API tokens, your cloud credentials, your client repositories. On a VPS meant for this, you choose what the machine holds, and an unfortunate command stops at its disk.
You keep root access to install everything you need, and a full reinstall takes a few minutes from your client area. It is the kind of safety net that never gets used, until the day it does.
Anthropic’s documentation asks for 4 GB of memory as a minimum, an x64 or ARM64 processor, and Ubuntu 20.04 or newer, or Debian 10 or newer. That is the floor for the binary to start, not for the agent to work: it clones repositories, installs dependencies, runs test suites and compiles.
Pulse, 2 vCore and 4 GB at €7.90 a month, sits exactly at that level: the agent runs, and that is where the range opens. Edge, 6 vCore and 8 GB at €12.90, is the comfortable tier once the repository is large or several sessions run at once. Orion, Legacy and Infinity beyond that, for monorepos and heavy builds. You move up a plan pro rata, without reinstalling anything.
We supply the machine and its tooling: Claude Code installed with the official installer, git, tmux, Node, Python, the build toolchain, Docker, root access and DDoS protection. You bring your Anthropic account.
Claude Code requires a Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise or Console account; the free claude.ai plan does not include access to it. NorthHost resells no access to Claude and is not affiliated with Anthropic: you authenticate with your own account, and your usage is billed by Anthropic, not by us.
Because all of it happens in a terminal, access needs nothing but an SSH client. A desktop at the office, a loaner laptop at a client site, a tablet on the train: you reattach to the session and see where the agent is.
It is also what makes the thing usable by more than one person. A shared tmux session, and two developers watch the same agent work on the same repository.
Claude Code is excellent on a laptop, right up until you have to close it. A big refactor, a database migration, a test suite that runs for twenty minutes: the session stops the moment the machine sleeps, and you pick up from a standstill. On a VPS it carries on inside a tmux and you read the result the next morning.
There is a second reason, less obvious and more serious. Claude Code runs commands with your rights. On your workstation those are the rights that open your SSH keys, your production tokens and the rest of your digital life. On a VPS dedicated to this, a slip stops at that machine, which you reinstall in three minutes.
It works through the night: You set the job going, you close the laptop. The session runs in tmux and you read it in the morning.
Your keys stay where they are: The agent runs commands on a server meant for that, not on the laptop where your production credentials live.
Several jobs at once: One tmux session per project: the API, the front end, the migration. You move between them without losing anything.
From anywhere: An SSH client is all it takes. Your desktop, a loaner laptop, a tablet: you pick the running session back up.
A complete development server, ready for an agent that compiles, tests and deploys.
Claude Code installed: Laid down with Anthropic’s official installer, up to date, ready to launch. All that is left is connecting your account.
Git and the build toolchain: git, build-essential, Node, Python and ripgrep are there. The agent clones, installs and compiles without asking for anything.
tmux for long sessions: Your sessions survive the SSH disconnect. You reconnect and find the agent still at work.
Root access kept: The machine is yours. You install whatever your project needs, with no ticket and no permission to request.
CPU for the test suite: From 6 to 18 vCore of Intel Xeon Gold 6132: a test run or a build does not bring the session to its knees.
NVMe for the repositories: Cloning, installing dependencies, writing thousands of files: the agent spends its life on the disk.
Docker available: The agent brings up your containers, starts a test database and throws it away afterwards. Nothing to prepare on your side.
Reachable over SSH: From your desktop, a loaner laptop or a phone. The session is waiting where you left it.
